Intimate Backyard Wedding at Family Home

This intimate backyard wedding was one for the books – deciding to postpone their big wedding because of COVID, Jennifer and Matt kept their original wedding date and got married in this intimate wedding at Jennie’s childhood home. It was a wonderful wedding with family, perfect weather, and an accordionist to keep everyone entertained. Backyard weddings are quickly becoming popular and I love them!

How They Met

Jennie & Matt’s families have known each other for their entire lives – spending holidays together when they were kids. Their parents all grew up together in San Francisco and her dad and Matt’s uncle even worked together.

At a cousin’s wedding 4 years ago (the same cousin who officiated THIS wedding!), both dads told them that they should date, so they did! They went on their 1st date a week later and the rest is history. Jennie says, “We both knew that day, this would be the person I want to spend the rest of my life with….even though we had already been in each others for so many years already.”

Matt proposed in 2019, surprising Jennie with flowers, champagne, and a beautifully decorated home. Jennie says that their home is their “happy place”, so it made sense that Matt asked her there. It was just the 2 of them and their adorable pup, Leo. After the proposal, they celebrated with Jennie’s grandparents (who live in the same building) at a lovely dinner on Nob Hill. Jennie says it was truly perfect, just the way they wanted it… at home, with their dog and their people. The next day, the celebrated at Jennie’s parents home with both families.

The Day

I began the day by taking photos of the beautiful backyard wedding decor – all done up in an array of flowers, gorgeous tables, and big umbrellas to keep everyone cool. After Jennie finished her hair and makeup (making her even more gorgeous – which I didn’t think that was possible), we traveled to a wooded park just around the corner for her “first look” with Matt. We (the wonderful videographer and I) positioned Matt down a beautiful trail and had Jennie walk to him. He turned around and watched her come to him with tears in his eyes. This was probably my favorite part of every wedding day – all the emotion, love, and nerves rise to the surface and then, wham! They settle and it’s just the 2 of them, lost in each other for a few moments. And I’m there the entire time… giving them their space while photographing every moment.

We then spent the next 15 minutes or so taking beautiful portraits of Jennie & Matt – walking them around the area let them spend a few minutes “alone” and let us create relaxed, gorgeous, natural portraits. I love every one of them – even those with their personalized COVID masks on!

The Backyard Wedding

The intimate wedding took place under a gorgeous arbor decorated top-to-bottom with flowers created by the wonderful artists at San Marin Flowers. Jennie’s Dad proudly walked her down the aisle. (I was warned (by him!) that he’s a crier and I’m pretty sure he was already sniffling a little even before they started walking!) The ceremony was officiated by Matt’s cousin, Megan, and included the couple reading their own vows. It was super romantic and full of so much love. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house – mine included.

The Party

After the ceremony, everyone mingled in the garden enjoying cocktails and appetizers by the chefs at Mangia Nosh, which gave me a chance to take photojournalistic candids of everyone (my favorite!). The couple even organized an accordionist for the party and everyone loved it… and it made for great photos!

Guests were then called for the buffet, which was an Italian/Jewish feast – and delicious. Grandma & Grandpa tore the challah and everyone mingled (while staying safely distanced), ate delicious food, laughed, and had a wonderful time.

Jen and Matt’s first dance was divine and her dance with her dad made everyone cry (including me – again!). Afterward, the bride & groom cut their beautiful wedding cake. (Jen’s grandfather was one of the original owners of Victoria Bakery in SF and the cake was from them. So were the dessert platters of cannoli, biscotti, and other Italian cookies).  And look at the dress that Jennie changed in to for the reception – I’m in love! This was an intimate backyard wedding that I’ll never forget.

What They Said

“Thank you so much for everything Michelle. We had the most amazing day. We could not imagine having anyone else there to capture our day. Your helped turn a crazy year into the most special one for us. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You believe in love so much and it truly is infectious.”
