This Greek wedding in Oakland and reception at Jacuzzi Winery in Sonoma was simply amazing. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral was a magnificent venue for Dena & Panos’ wedding. Afterwards they gathered with their closest friends & family at Jacuzzi Winery in Sonoma for a fun reception filled with great food, wine, and lots of laughs.
About the Cathedral
On May 21, 1921, Oakland’s Greek Orthodox Church — the first in the East Bay area — was dedicated with more than 250 people in attendance It was dedicated to the Koimisis (the Dormition of the Mother of God). The Greek Orthodox Cathedral’s high, vaulted ceilings and impressive stained-glass windows provided a stunning backdrop for Panos & Dena’s wedding ceremony. The intricate mosaics that adorn the walls and ceilings are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artists who created them. The richly decorated iconostasis, or screen of icons, serves as a focal point for the ceremony and is a visual representation of the Orthodox faith.
Ceremony
The wedding ceremony itself was a deeply meaningful and symbolic event steeped in Orthodox tradition. After being blessed by the priest, the bride and groom exchanged rings placed on their right hands. The couple was crowned with wreaths symbolizes their union of two individuals into one flesh. They then drank from a common cup, symbolizing their willingness to share all things in life, both bitter and sweet.
